Mothering Sunday: Honouring Mothers Mothering
Mothering Sunday is a significant day in the Christian and cultural calendar. It is a time set aside to honour mothers and recognise the profound influence they have on our lives, families and communities. While often associated with the modern celebration of Mother’s Day, the Christian tradition of Mothering Sunday has deeper roots in gratitude for those who nurture and care for others.
Today, we recognise mothers in every capacity. Some are biological mothers, some adoptive or step-mothers, and others have served in a maternal role through guidance, support and care. Many people have experienced the love of a grandmother, aunt, guardian or mentor who, in practice, fulfilled the role of a mother.
For some, this day is one of celebration with mothers who are present. For others, it is a day of remembrance for mothers who have passed away. Whatever our circumstances, Mothering Sunday reminds us of the deep and lasting impact mothers have on who we become.
The Bible offers many examples of mothers whose faith and courage shaped history. Hannah prayed earnestly for a child and later dedicated her son Samuel to God: “For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him.” — 1 Samuel 1:27
Sarah experienced the joy of motherhood after many years of waiting, while Jochebed protected her infant son Moses from danger. Mary, the mother of Jesus, accepted God’s calling with humility and faith:
“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.” — Luke 1:38
Scripture also recognises the wisdom and influence of mothers in shaping the lives of their children: “Listen… to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” — Proverbs 1:8
The love and sacrifice of mothers often appear in ordinary acts of care, comforting us when we are ill, guiding us with wisdom and encouraging us when we struggle.
As Abraham Lincoln once said, “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.”
Today, we honour mothers everywhere, those with us, those remembered, and those who have nurtured others with love and devotion.
To whatever category you may occupy, we wish you a Happy Mother’s Day!!
