Trump and Xi’s Washington Summit: Power, Technology, and the Pursuit of Peace
President Donald Trump’s welcome for China’s President Xi Jinping in Washington was highly ceremonial. Xi’s visit ran from 23 to 25 September 2026, and the White House hosted a state dinner attended by leading figures from the technology industry. The display of goodwill allowed both governments to discuss cooperation, even as difficult questions about trade, Taiwan, and artificial intelligence remained unresolved.
At the dinner, Trump said that he and Xi represented “different systems“, but that their countries had “never gotten along better“. The remark expressed his hopes for the relationship. It did not, by itself, settle the disagreements that shape it. Diplomacy will be judged by what the two governments do after the ceremonies end.
AI technology was also a pressing matter, and guests including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Sundar Pichai, Sam Altman, and Jensen Huang, whose companies influence how artificial intelligence is developed and used, attended the meeting. President Xi Jinping stated, “We have the capability and responsibility to ensure AI development is under human control and serves the people’s well-being.”
The visit opened the door to dialogue, but no significant breakthrough was announced. The responsibility now lies with the leaders and their ability to turn cordial words into sustained discussion and concrete safeguards.
Romans 12:18 offers a fitting reflection: “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Peace between powerful nations requires more than a warm welcome. It calls for restraint, honest negotiation, and responsibility for the consequences of their decisions. Those choices will affect people far beyond Washington and Beijing today. The future of world peace relies on dialogue and a mutual pursuit of peace. However, the believer’s confidence rests in this, that Jesus offers believers a peace that exists not by
changing their circumstances, but by securing their hearts to His accomplished victory over the world and its power to destroy them.
