Kanya King: A Legacy That Will Echo Beyond the Music

09/06/2026

On 3rd June 2026, Kanya King CBE passed away at the age of 57. Best known as the founder of the MOBO Awards, King leaves behind a remarkable legacy of vision, courage, determination and faith.

Her passing marks the loss of one of the most influential figures in British music and culture who, over a 30-year period, created a globally recognised music phenomenon that celebrated and elevated artists of Black origin and diverse musical traditions.

In 1996, at a time when mainstream institutions often overlooked Black British music, Kanya King took a bold and risky step. After remortgaging her home, she launched the MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards to celebrate and promote Black music and culture across the United Kingdom. What began as a dream grew into one of the most respected music platforms in the world, providing recognition, visibility and opportunities for countless artists.

Through the MOBO Awards, artists such as Stormzy, Craig David, and Amy Winehouse, among many others, were introduced to wider audiences and given a platform from which to thrive. Her contribution to music, culture and diversity was recognised nationally when she was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her services to music and culture.

In 2024, King publicly revealed that she had been living with colon cancer. Despite her illness, she continued to demonstrate the resilience and determination that had characterised her entire life. Those who knew her often spoke of her unwavering faith, a faith she credited with helping her overcome many challenges throughout her journey.

Her passing serves as a powerful reminder of life’s fragility. Success, wealth, influence and achievements are all temporary. Life can change unexpectedly, and none of us knows how much time we have. Kanya King’s story encourages us not only to pursue our dreams with courage, but also to value our relationships, cherish our loved ones, and live with purpose while we have the opportunity.

The music industry has lost a pioneer, but her legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Kanya King’s life reminds us that one person’s vision can change an industry, and one person’s faith and determination can leave a lasting impact long after they are gone.

The Psalmist reminds us:

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).

As we reflect on Kanya King’s life and contribution, may we be encouraged to make the most of the time God has entrusted to us, to pursue our calling with courage, and to leave a legacy that positively impacts others. Though her voice has fallen silent, the influence of her work, faith and vision will continue to echo for generations to come.

Rest in peace, Kanya King CBE. Your legacy will not be forgotten.
