England’s World Cup Clash with Mexico Stays at 1 am After FIFA U-turn

05/07/2026

This year marks 60 years since England won the World Cup, and the song ‘Football’s Coming Home’ resonates even louder as England eagerly anticipates its FIFA World Cup Round of 16 encounter against Mexico. There was much debate about the UK moving the match forward by six hours, as this would not align with the original UK timing.

However, following strong objections from both the English and Mexican football authorities over the impact on player preparation, supporter travel and tournament logistics, FIFA decided to retain the original schedule. Weather conditions will continue to be monitored, and any delays during the match will depend on established lightning safety protocols.

This decision was welcomed by England supporters who had already made travel arrangements for what promises to be one of the biggest fixtures of the tournament, but the timing will impact Monday morning office and school times. Beyond doubt, this game will present the England team with challenges as they play at the iconic Azteca Stadium in Mexico. England will play at a stadium packed with passionate home support in a stadium located in a city with high altitude, which places additional physical demands on the players, which will not be lost in the knowledge that Mexico has only suffered two losses out of 90 matches played at the fortress.

Nevertheless, England will be looking to build on their victory over DR Congo (who were ranked 41 in the world football rankings) and continue their pursuit of World Cup glory against Mexico, ranked 10.

Throughout this World Cup, we have seen changes criticised by pundits and fans alike. These changes mirror life, which often reminds us that circumstances can change unexpectedly and sometimes beyond our control. Nonetheless, successful teams remain focused despite uncertainty. The same principle applies in life, and as followers of Christ, we are called to trust God even when plans change, as God never changes.

In the time of uncertainty, scripture reminds us to commit our way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. (Psalm 37:5, ESV).

Seeing these massive stadiums and the array of fans cheering on their country is amazing. We have seen small countries achieve so much and progress beyond their dreams, and even cause larger teams to struggle against them. This is the beauty and uncertainty of football that has gripped many fans over the past few weeks.

As legendary football manager Bill Shankly once said, “Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it’s much more serious than that.” While spoken with humour, it reminds us of football’s power to unite communities and inspire hope. England will now seek to let their football do the talking on the pitch.
