Dolly Parton – We Will Always Love You

On Tuesday, 25 August 2026, the world lost one of the most recognisable and influential voices in country music. Dolly Parton, aged 80, passed away following a brief battle with cancer, leaving behind an extraordinary musical and humanitarian legacy.

Born in Tennessee USA, Dolly rose from humble beginnings singing in her grandfather’s church to become a singer, guitarist, songwriter, actress and international icon. Her career spanned an amazing seven-decade career, during which time she wrote countless songs including classics like“Jolene”, “9 to 5”, “Coat of Many Colors”, “Here You Come Again” and “I Will Always Love You”.

The latter went on to become a global phenomenon when Whitney Houston recorded her celebrated number one hit version for The Bodyguard in 1992. 

Dolly also formed unforgettable musical partnerships, most notably with Kenny Rogers, with whom she recorded “Islands in the Stream”, and with Porter Wagoner.

Behind all the glitz and glamour was a woman who emerged out of Church of God in Tennessee.

Dolly’s maternal grandfather, Rev. Jacob “Jake” Owens, was a Pentecostal Church of God preacher. Dolly remembered him affectionately as “Brother Jake”. Reflecting upon those formative church years, she recalled that he allowed the family to express themselves and make what he called a “Joyful Noise” as the psalmist wrote  “O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.” — Psalm 95:1 (KJV)

He recognised musical ability as a God-given gift and encouraged young Dolly to stand before the congregation and sing.

It was from here, this humble church beginning that helped Dolly nuture her craft that would later make her world renowned. 

Dolly Parton has now left the stage, and this world but she has left behind her songs, her faith, and an unparalleled legacy.

Dolly is now out of sight but not out of heart and minds as the world says goodbye to a legend fittingly we say, Dolly, we will always love you.
